Waiting for Toast Soldiers

Waiting for Toast Soldiers

Oil on canvas

30″ x 24″

Private Collection

This painting reminds me of my grandmother’s Christmas-time visits when we’d wake up early Christmas morning and find oranges in our stockings and sit on her lap while she sipped her tea. Her favorite breakfast was a soft boiled egg and toast strips, which she called “toast soldiers.” If we were lucky, she’d let my sister and I dip our toast strips in her tea.
