This painting reminds the artist of her grandmother’s Christmas-time visits when they’d wake up early Christmas morning and find oranges in their stockings and sit on her lap while she sipped her tea. The artist remembers, “Her favorite breakfast was a soft boiled egg and toast strips, which she called ‘toast soldiers.’ If we were lucky, she’d let my sister and I dip our toast strips in her tea.”
